Township Tours

We are sure that our Township-Tour will be one of the most impressive experiences during your time in South Africa, guided by a professional English speaking guide who will be your driver as well. All our tours are designed as private tours for a maximum of 4 persons. A private tour means no other person will join other than your own party. This way the tour is flexible and tailor-made to your personal interests and background, so that you will gain much more out of it. On request  only tours for more than 4 persons are also available.

 
Our tours shall establish better understanding for the people and deliver an insight into their lives and daily routines, the personal contact is our concern. To achieve this goal, we include a walking tour (guided by a local guide, duration about 1½ hours) for giving you possibilities of personal contacts.

  Half day tour including walking tour with local guide

 
First we will take you to the oldest township in Cape Town, Langa. There we will meet our local guide who will do the walking tour with you for about 1½ hours. You will hear about the history of Langa and meet some families in the hostels, flats and shacks to learn about the different ways of living in a township.
 
     
  From here we drive through one of the townships where mainly colored people are living to see the difference between black and colored areas.  
   
We continue passing other townships to get to the second biggest township of South Africa, Khayelitsha. Here we visit another social project before we take you back to your accommodation in Cape Town.  
   
Rate for half day tour (about 4½ hours) including local guide for the walking tour and donations for the families visited: total of R2,600 for a party of 1-4 guests.  
   
You might want to add on the lunch in Khayelitsha, cooked for us by a typical “mama” in her house who will join us at the table and share her story with us. The rate includes lunch and juice. Additional costs per person of R190 (please also include your guide).

  The morning of this tour is equivalent to the half day tour, including the walking tour for about 1½ hours with a local guide. Additional to the half day we will take a drive through the townships of Nyanga and Crossroads to get to Khayelitsha, the second biggest township in South Africa.

 
   
Here we will have lunch, cooked for us by a typical “mama” in her house who will join us at the table and share her story with us.

 
After lunch we will visit a lookout place to see the huge area of the township. We will also visit some more social projects before we will take you back to your accommodation in Cape Town.  
   
Rate for full day tour (about 8 hours) including local guide for the walking tour and donations for the families visited: total of R3,400 for a party of 1-4 guests plus additional R190 per person for lunch (please also include your guide).

  The Sunday offers a special opportunity: At 08:00am we will visit one of the churches in the townships and attend the gospel service with its singing and dancing. Even for guests who are not religious it will be a very special experience.  
   
Afterwards we will meet our local guide who will do the walking tour with you for about 1½ hours. You will hear about the history of Langa and meet some families in the hostels, flats and shacks to learn about the different ways of living in a township.

Townships and Winelands: full day tour including walking tour with local guide

 
First we will take you to the oldest township in Cape Town, Langa. There we will meet our local guide who will do the walking tour with you for about 1½ hours. You will hear about the history of Langa and meet some families in the hostels, flats and shacks to learn about the different ways of living in a township.

 
From here we drive through one of the townships where mainly colored people are living to see the difference between black and colored areas. We will pass other townships to get to the second biggest township of South Africa, Khayelitsha. Here we visit a social project before we continue to the stunning landscapes of the Cape wine lands.

 
Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa and center of wine making. You have the choice of either taking a walk through the historic city center or to continue to Franschhoek, which is very much influenced by the French. Finally we drive to Paarl, where we will pay a visit to one of the wineries for a wine and cheese tasting before we take you back to your accommodation in Cape Town.

All rates include transport with our vehicle and an English speaking tour guide who will also be the driver. Also included are the fees for the local township guide and donations for the families we will visit. Meals according to above descriptions, not included are further drinks, personal expenses and tips (recommended are 5-10% of the tour rate and 10-15% of the meal). After the tour finished, most of our guest enjoy a walk along the near beach in Milnerton with it’s famous view over Table Bay towards Cape Town and Table Mountain. With prior arranged booking and a small surcharge we can also fetch you at your accommodation as well as dropping you there after the tour, surcharge per tour for central Cape Town R300 or R500 for Bantry Bay, Clifton or Camps Bay (other parts of Cape Town on request).

 

Often we are being asked, if and what kind of donations will be welcome in the townships. Besides money there is always a need for used clothing and shoes, also material for drawing and playing in the kindergartens. In case you would like to hand out something, you are more than welcome to bring it along!
We recommend to support the local artists in the craft markets if you are looking for souvenirs or small gifts. Very often they are short of change, it is advisable that you also bring along some notes in smaller values.

 

With your reservation a deposit of 50% of the total tour price is payable to secure your booking. Payment can be done by credit card or by electronic transfer into our bank account, balance payable in South African Rand in cash on the start of the tour.

 

If cancelled within 2 weeks prior to tour date, 50% of the total tour price will be charged. If cancelled within 2 weeks prior to tour or in case of “No-Show”, the total tour price will be due for payment.
